IMPORTANT HIGHLIGHTS

On June 5, 1981, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report the first cases of what would later be known as AIDS. With the development of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), also known as combination antiretroviral therapy, the prognosis and life expectancy of people with HIV has increased significantly. Before the development of HAART, people infected with HIV died within 2 years of the onset of AIDS in most cases.

There is hope now and people diagnosed with HIV are living long and healthy lives! Know Your Status! Get Tested! Get PrEP! Take Care of Yourselves!

June 5 is a day to honor long-term survivors of the HIV epidemic and raises awareness of their needs, issues and journeys.

Please take a moment to watch the video below to celebrate the life and treatment care of Stephen Aube, an amazing HIV Long-Term Survivor (35 years), HIV Advocate and FDOH Monroe County patient.
